What is the Notting Hill Carnival?

Imagine a place where people come together, where crowds dance, where music fills the air: This is the Notting Hill Carnival. The carnival started in 1964 because Londoners wanted to celebrate the array of cultures and traditions of its people. When the floats are decorated, when the dancers have warmed up, when the BBQ’s are hot, the carnival can begin.

Parades
Prepare yourself to be amazed by the vibrant procession of dancers weaving their way through the street. Enjoy the bright vibrant colours of the costumed dancers and don’t miss out on the spectacular steel bands parading through the streets of West London.

Food
If you get hungry, check out one of the 240 street stalls selling food such as: jerk chicken, exotic fruit, rice and peas. If you need refreshment then there’s rum punch or spicy ginger beer to wash your food down with.

Music
Music is at the heart of the Notting Hill carnival. Feel the rhythm of the Caribbean while the soothing sound of steel drums play. Or if you’re feeling more energetic dance along to the DJ’s.

Did you know?

There are over 240 food stalls at the Notting Hill carnival
There’s also over 60 bands and 70 floats.
Last year the Notting Hill carnival had 2 million visitors.
You may want to use public transport because most of the roads will be blocked off.
